Sports Premium

Background
At Tidbury Green, we believe every child deserves the chance to enjoy being active, to feel healthy, and to shine in sport and physical activity. To support this, the Government has been providing dedicated Primary PE and Sport funding since 2013. This national investment is designed to help schools enrich their PE provision and promote healthy lifestyles for all pupils.
The funding is given directly to schools, allowing Head Teachers and staff to decide how best to use it to meet the needs of their children and community. This flexibility means we can tailor our offer to ensure high-quality PE, a broad range of sporting opportunities and a strong focus on wellbeing for every child.
Allocation
Sports Premium funding is based on the number of pupils in Years R–6 recorded in the January census.
Each year, schools with 17 or more primary-aged pupils receive:
-
£8,000 lump sum, plus
-
£5 per pupil
Smaller schools receive £500 per pupil.
This funding allows us to build on our current provision and make sustainable improvements for the future.
Accountability
As with all public funding, schools must show how Sports Premium is used and the difference it makes. Ofsted now places a stronger emphasis on PE, sport and physical activity within its inspection framework.
Each year, we publish on our website:
-
How much funding we received
-
How the money has been spent (or is planned to be spent)
-
The impact on pupils’ participation, enjoyment, confidence and physical development
This transparency helps ensure every penny is used to improve opportunities for our children and promote healthy, active lifestyles.
Best Practice
Schools across the country share examples of excellent practice, and we use this national learning to continue strengthening our own offer. At Tidbury Green, we aim to build a PE and sport curriculum that excites children, encourages them to try new challenges and nurtures a lifelong love of moving, playing and staying healthy.

Swimming and Water Safety at Tidbury Green
Learning to swim is a vital life skill. Drowning is the third most common cause of accidental death in children, and for some pupils, school is the only chance they will have to learn how to stay safe in and around water.
At Tidbury Green, all children currently take part in swimming lessons in Year 4, and we strongly encourage families to support regular swimming outside of school too. We are committed to giving every child the best possible swimming and water safety education. This is something we can only achieve by working together.
The government recognises the importance of swimming and water safety, which is why it forms part of the National Curriculum. All schools must teach pupils to:
-
Swim 25 metres confidently and competently
-
Use a range of strokes effectively (e.g. front crawl, backstroke, breaststroke)
-
Perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations
Swimming is not only fun and a great way to stay active; it also teaches children what to do in an emergency. With many canal networks locally, it is especially important that Tidbury Green pupils know how to stay safe near water. Swimming is an activity that supports both physical health and mental wellbeing, and it can be enjoyed at any age or ability.
